Hattiesburg council approves DuPree's Judicial picks

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

The Hattiesburg City Council has approved Mayor Johnny DuPree's nominees for interim municipal court judges, but not before adding its own caveat to the selections.

In a special called meeting Friday afternoon, council members Dave Ware, Debra Delgado, and Henry Mayor approved the mayor's choices of Jonathan Farris and Carol Jones to be temporary or interim judges, effective October 1.

With the mayor absent, Delgado added an amendment making the appointment good for only 15 days. Both the motion and amendment were approved unanimously.

Councilman Ware said the decision will keep the courts going for at least two weeks.

"It will also give us an opportunity to look at some of the changes that Mayor DuPree has proposed.  Also many changes to our current system that members of the council are looking at and I'm sure will be forthcoming".

"So, know this." said Ware. "Over the next two weeks we'll be working very hard and diligently, to get a system in place that will function more effectively, and one that we can all look at as having integrity and confidence in.  In this roughly two week period will give us an opportunity and encourage us to work diligently to come up with a plan that is going to work for Hattiesburg, and I think this is a good thing."

Municipal judges Vanessa Jones, Jolly Matthews and George Schmidt all received their termination notices from the Mayor in the past 24 hours.
