2012 USM athletics budget deficit not as large as first claimed

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

After reviewing a state college board audit of USM's athletic budget for the years 2009 and 2012, the State Auditor's office concluded there was no wrongdoing or mismanagement with regard to contracts and equipment purchases.

The Institutions of Higher Learning audit was prompted by statements made in April by then Interim Athletic Director, Jeff Hammond, who blamed the athletic department's 2012 budget deficit of 1.3 million dollars to fiscal mismanagement by the prior athletic administration.

However, figures released from Southern Miss Thursday, show the final budget deficit for 2012 which ended June 30th is $387,000.

Meanwhile, the 2013 budget reflects a transfer of $1 million from the University's general fund to the athletic department.  The 2012 transfer by the administration was just over $800,000.
