Alcohol served at Laurel's Loblolly Festival

LAUREL, MS (WDAM) -

Tuesday, the Laurel City Council voted five to one in favor of having alcoholic beverages on the streets of Laurel during its annual Loblolly Festival.

However, the council attorney advised them that it may not be a good idea. Attorney DeeDee Bassi said the current ordinance does not have a special permit section which will allow alcohol as a part of the one day festival; however, the attorney for Laurel Main Street Association said that is not the case and alcohol can be served in designated areas at the festival.

Despite the advice of the city attorney, the City Administrator Dennis Keveryn said the council voted so alcohol will be served.

The Laurel Main Street Association does have a $2 million liability insurance policy in place just in case injuries occur.
