State Department of Education releases school test scores

The Mississippi Department of Education released Wednesday the 2011-2012 accountability ratings, a ranking and grading of the state's school based on standardized testing and other factors.

The revised system ranks school from A to F. This system replaces the old ranking labels of star, high-performance, successful, academic watch, low-performing, at risk of failing, and failing.

According to the MDE, Mississippi school districts also showed a 2 percent increase in graduation rates, rising to 73.7%. Dropout rates dropped to 16.7 percent. Scores showed increases in English and Biology over the previous year, but Algebra showed a decrease. English scores increased for
the second year in a row. New tests for biology and history began with this evaluation period.

The Subject Area Testing Program results were as follows: Algebra 82% passing; Biology 75% passing; English 73% passing; U.S. History 72% passing.
