HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Chain Park at Twin Forks in Hattiesburg looked like Chain Lake Friday morning following Thursday's heavy rains.
The park sits on the banks of the Leaf River off of Highway 11 near the city limits.
City Parks and Recreation General Manager Ann Jones says the park is in a natural flood zone. Whenever the river reaches 16-feet it's expected the park will flood. She said flooding was taken into consideration when the park was built. The pavilion, playground, boardwalk were all designed to withstand flood waters.
Jones says she doesn't expect any major damage to the park once the water recedes back into the river.
"There may be some minor clean-up, but again the park was built with flooding in mind," said Jones. "Chain has flooded several times since its been open and we've never had flood damage to structures."
The park is currently closed to the public and will remain closed until the flood waters go away which is expected to be two to three days.
