As Hurricane Isaac makes landfall and continues to impact Mississippi with rising storm surge, high winds and torrential rains, Gov. Phil Bryant, MEMA Executive Director Robert Latham and other officials will remain on the Gulf Coast until Isaac moves out of the area.
"We are in this storm together, and I'll be in touch with emergency officials throughout the night," said Gov. Phil Bryant.
MEMA issues the following updates on state actions in response to Isaac:
As of 9 p.m. 33 shelters across 16 counties are hosting 1,827 evacuees. Total capacity in open shelters is 9,165.
1,500 Mississippi National Guard troops have been deployed to affected areas.
45 troopers from the Mississippi Highway Patrol have been deployed to affected areas to assist local law enforcement.
One truckload of generators is staged at Camp Shelby in Hattiesburg.
40 truckloads of water and 20 truckloads of food are staged and ready to be delivered into Mississippi tomorrow.
An additional 20 truckloads of water will be available if needed.
Two truckloads of tarps are staged and ready to be delivered into Mississippi tomorrow.
More than 80,000 sandbags have been distributed to affected counties.
Search and rescue personnel and equipment are on stand-by for deployment if needed, including
Two special forces boat teams.
Four swift water rescue teams.
Five additional boats and officers.
Forecasters expect Isaac to move slowly through Mississippi, with high surge, intense rain and strong winds through Wednesday.
