Eight dogs were rescued from a home in the Glendale Community Friday afternoon.
A rescue team from the Humane Society of the United States and the Southern Pines Animal Shelter went to the home on Marilyn Street after obtaining a seizure warrant.
The dogs had been unattended in the home for more than six weeks because the owner is in the hospital. Friends and a sister had tried to care for the dogs, but the seizure was made necessary because the power to the home had been turned off. Conditions inside the home were described as unlivable.
Two cats and one dog could not be located and were left behind.
"It's a very unfortunate situation. I feel compassion for towards the owner. I can only imagine how distressing it must be for her in the hospital with animals that she loved and cared about and not knowing if they are okay or not," Said Lydia Sattler, State Director, Humane Society of the United States. "It's a great time for everybody to make sure they have a plan for their animals if something unexpected should happen to them. It's good to have some type of arrangement for your pets."
All the dogs were taken to the Southern Pines Animal Shelter where they will get medical care and be put up for adoption.
