HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

Walking to class will be a lot more comfortable this year for hundreds of students at one Hattiesburg elementary school, thanks to the Hub City's West Point Baptist Church. Church members Thursday night handed out more than 430 free pairs of sports shoes to students at Rowan Elementary School.

The church collected more than $10,000 to buy a new pair for each student.

They were given away during a Parent-Teacher Association meeting.

"Every year around this time, my staff and I look to do something to engage students, to support students with back-to-school efforts," said Rev. Marcus Cathey, senior pastor of West Point Baptist Church. "This year, we just wanted to do something different," he said.

Earlier this year, church volunteers gave the school library a makeover.
