Hattiesburg golfer makes history

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

With his family surrounding him at the First Tee of the Pine Belt on Tuesday afternoon, Jashaad McGilberry made a little history.

McGilberry, 18, signed a scholarship to play golf at William Carey University. In doing so, the Hattiesburg High School senior became the first ever African-American to sign a golf scholarship with the Crusaders.

McGilberry is also a product of the First Tee of the Pine Belt; a place he's devoted much time and community service to. "He would spend at least seven hours per day volunteering at the site," McGilberry's uncle Rod Woullard told the First Tee.

McGilberry and the Crusaders begin their fall season on Sept. 17, when they travel to St. Simons Island, Ga. to participate in the Coastal Georgia Fall Invitational.

Following a school-record 55 wins and run that ended in an 8-7 loss in the NJCAA national championship, Jones County Junior College softball is eager to open the 2018 season on February 3. Coming that close to the school’s first national title serves as motivation enough for the Lady Bobcats. Regardless, expectations are always high for coach Chris Robinson’s teams – JCJC is a combined 105-12 the last two seasons.
