Jones County Sheriff trims back on spending

LAUREL, MS (WDAM) -

Jones County Sheriff Alex Hodge has cut a little more than $100,000 out of his budget.

Monday, Hodge told county supervisors he is leaving five position unfilled in the department. Hodge said he has moved two deputy sheriffs from the transport division into corrections.

Hodge said there are also two openings left by outgoing administrators that will not be filled. Hodge said, there's also no plans to fill the vacancy of Lieutenant Tony Stiles, a deputy still recovering in the hospital after being gunned down on the job last month.

All together the cuts will save the department about a $150,000. These cuts come on the heels of supervisors asking the sheriff to rein in his spending. The sheriff is almost $300,000 over budget for this fiscal year.
