Former HPD captain will face 5 years probation for embezzlement

A Forrest County judge deferred former Hattiesburg Police Department Captain James Hooker's guilty plea to charges of embezzlement Monday morning.

The plea is deferred for five years, and during that time Hooker will be under probation by the Mississippi Department of Corrections.

Hattiesburg Circuit Court Judge Bob Helfrich demanded Hooker, dressed in a brown suit for the sentencing, surrender his license to practice law enforcement in the state if Mississippi forever. After five years Hooker would be able to pursue a law enforcement license outside of Mississippi.

The judge also demanded that Hooker pay a $2,500 fine to the Victims Relief Fund.

Hooker was charged with embezzlement after a Toshiba television set from the HPD evidence storage room went missing. According to court documents Hooker later admitted taking the television and giving it to a friend.
