Hundreds of students and their families descended on Century Park on the Southern Miss campus Friday.
It was day one of freshmen move-in day. Most had to wait in traffic along West 4th Street more than an hour before reaching the dorm. Upon reaching the dorms they were greeted by groups of faculty and students who assisted them in moving their belongings into their rooms.
Also on hand was Vice President of Student Affairs Joe Paul who was pleased to announce there were about 1800 incoming freshmen, the most in school history for the fifth consecutive year.
"We have a record freshmen class moving in. We're moving freshmen today and tomorrow," said Paul. "Every room, every bed at Southern Miss is booked. We've got a waiting list of about 150. We're excited to welcome them to Southern Miss."
In the next few days the freshmen will go through a thorough orientation of the campus as part of Golden Eagle Welcome Week.
Classes start on Wednesday.
