Jones County school board files suit against county supervisors

The Jones County School Board is asking the courts to force county supervisors to pay the school districts annual $2.8 million bond indebtedness bill.

School Board Attorney Terry Caves filed suit in Circuit Court late Thursday evening against the supervisors.

The lawsuit said supervisors acted improperly when they voted not to pay the principal and interest on the school bond issue passed back in 2007. The court documents said the law clearly states that county supervisors "shall" grant the school district whatever it requests financially.

In addition, Caves asked the court for an emergency hearing on the matter prior to September 15,2013 and demand the county determine the millage rate necessary to generate funds equal to the dollar amount requested by the school board.

It also asks the court to force the county to comply with state law to provide the funds necessary to make payments on the bond .

Caves said time is of the essence with the fiscal year starting October 1st. He said the district bond payments is due in October.
