HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Twenty-eight puppies from the Southern Pines Animal Shelter are on their way to a Wisconsin shelter to be put up for adoption.
Thanks to Pet Smart Charities' Rescue Wagon the puppies are going a shelter that will give them a better chance to be adopted.
The animal transport program began in 2004. It's a way to move dogs and puppies from shelters with very few potential adopters to areas where there are far greater chances for adoption.
The program currently operates in 24 states with four different routes across the country.
This is the first time Southern Pines has participated in the program and the plan is to have a transport of puppies and dogs on a monthly basis.
Most of the puppies shipped off Wednesday have been in foster care while waiting for transport day. Because of overcrowding at the shelter, having people willing to foster these dogs and puppies is critical to the programs success.
If interested in fostering call the shelter at 601-544-6632.
