With school starting back, we feel it is time for our annual reminder about school bus safety. The yellow buses will hit the roads in many areas starting next week. We all need to pay attention. When a school bus is stopped to take on or drop off children, be sure and stop until they retract the sign and lights. Failure to do so has caused tragedy and death in our area. It also lead to the passing of Nathan's Law. Five-year-old Nathan Key was killed when a driver ignored a stopped school bus and decided to pass while children were being discharged. Young Nathan was hit and killed by this thoughtless act. His parents and others lobbied the state legislature for harsher punishments for those who don't obey the laws regarding school bus safety. Rightfully so—those buses carry precious cargo. So be mindful and careful on the roads as another school year starts and let's strive not to have any tragedies of this type again.
