Mississippians sign off on Olympian Gabby Douglas' hair

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Central Mississippians are speaking out against the criticism of Olympic gold medalist Gabby Douglas' hair style.

Saturday Mississippians Against Racism held a card signing at Marshall's Music and Book Store on Farish Street.

The public is invited to show appreciation for Douglas, her Olympic achievements and her natural hair.

Event organizers are shocked by reactions from many on social media about the 16-year-old's hair.

They are hoping to get at least 1,000 signatures on the Mississippi Loves Gabby card.

"Gabby Douglas was being vilified, and we felt that it was unearned and really what she earned was our admiration, our respect and love," said card signing co-chair Maati Jone Primm.

"I think it's a beautiful thing that she did and she's one of our young people at a very tender age and impressionable age and the fact that she shows such diligence and strength is something we want to be an example,' said Jackson Ward Two Councilman Chokwe Lumumba.

You can still sign the giant card Monday and Tuesday from 10a.m.-5 p.m. at the bookstore located at 618 North Farish Street in Jackson.

It will be mailed to Gabby on Wednesday August 16th.
