Jones County School Board calls special budget meeting

LAUREL, MS (WDAM) -

The Jones County School Board is being forced to make a decision on how to pay for its annual bond indebtedness bill that's due in October.

Superintendent Tommy Parker said the school board will have a specially called meeting, noon Friday at the central office on Highway 11.

The board is expected to discuss how it will pay its $2.8 million bond payment or if they will take legal action against county supervisors.

Wednesday, the supervisors voted 4 to 1 against raising property taxes by 10. 2 mills to help the school district make its bond payment.

The county attorney Wayne Thompson said the school board needs to go back to the drawing board before asking the people for such a steep millage increase.

Supervisors are also asking the sheriff's department to cut nearly $300,000 off its $4 million dollar budget request for this coming fiscal year.
