Jones County Supervisors refuse to pay bond indebtedness
JONES COUNTY, MS (WDAM) -
Jones County supervisors said Wednesday they will not pay the school district's $2.8 million bond payment.
School Superintendent Tommy Parker delivered the district's budget recommendations right before supervisors ended Wednesday's budget hearings.
All five supervisors were in favor of approving the district's $70 million annual operations budget but four of the five say there is no way they can support raising taxes on property owners to pay an annual bond payment that the district promised it would pay.
They said 70 percent of Jones County students receives free or reduced lunch and if parents can't afford school lunches there is no way they can afford a tax increase doing times.
