A pioneering move for Laurel's Wayne Farms and South Regional Medical Center Wednesday as the ribbon was cut on a brand new employee-only clinic on the site of the company's Jones County chicken plant.
It's a partnership between the medical center - and will be staffed by two of its own nurses - and Wayne Farms and will be dedicated to treating the approximately 650 employees of the plant. Complex Manager Sam LeNarz said he was looking through a magazine and got the idea to turn what was just one year ago a storage unit, into a clinic.
"What this will do is provide the employees an option for their healthcare as far as if they have just a sniffle, and ache or a pain, or they're not feeling good today - so they can come to the clinic and be seen by a professional, they can go back to work, they can come in before they go to work, said LeNarz. "It just offers them a convenient alternative to having to go to the doctor or the E.R."
"This is the first corporate clinic that we've done," said SCRMC President Doug Higginbotham. "So it's a great opportunity to prove that a clinic like this can improve the health and well being of the corporation."
The clinic will be open from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. every weekday, and visitors will be charged a small copay. This is the first Wayne Farms facility to have its own clinic.
