Petition circulates to allow beer and wine sales in Greene County

A petition is circulating in Greene County to get a referendum on the ballot in November that would allow for the sale of beer and light wine in the county.

Greene has been a dry county since the 70's. Not only is it illegal to sell alcohol, but it is also illegal to consume it or carry in from outside the county.

In order for the referendum to get on the ballot about 1700-signatures will be needed. They have 1300.

Supporters of  the referendum say some of the laws on the books in the county don't allow for freedom of choice.

"First and foremost it's important to be able to make your own choices." said David Breland, movement organizer. "A law that takes a choice away leaves us not necessarily as free as we can be."

The Greene-George Baptist Association are against the referendum and are organizing to get the word out that referendum will have a negative impact on the community.

"I think it's harmful to our families and our communities, said Jimmy Holcomb, Director of Missions. "I thin it's harmful divisive issue for our community at a time when we don't need it."
