State health dept.: Three of the 14 latest WNV cases are in the Pine Belt

The state health department confirms 14 new cases of West Nile virus.

Three of the latest are in Hinds County; two others each in Clarke and Rankin Counties.  The rest are in Jones, Lamar, Marion,  Adams, Calhoun, Lauderdale and Madison. 

The health department is providing the latest information on West Nile and other mosquito-borne illnesses – as well as a checklist to reduce your risk of contracting the virus.  The information is available by visiting www.HealthyMS.com/westnile or by calling, toll free, 1-877-WST-NILE (1-877-978-6453).  The hotline is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

    After losing the first two games of the season by a combined five points, Collins has won 12 consecutive games to advance to the class 2A South State title. The Tigers (12-2) defeated Bay Springs 22-8 on Friday to advance to a south state matchup against Taylorsville (13-1). Collins scored twice in the fourth quarter to overcome the Bulldogs on the road. "I feel great," said Collins head coach Eric Booth, a former USM running back.
