(RNN) – The demand for guns has spiked in Colorado following the mass shooting at a premiere of The Dark Knight Rises in Aurora.
The Colorado Bureau of Investigation approved background checks for nearly 3,000 people who wanted to purchase firearms between Friday and Sunday, according to The Denver Post. It was close to a 40 percent increase when compared to the previous two weekends.
An employee of a gun store in Parker, CO, told Denver Post he found 15 to 20 people waiting outside when he opened Friday.
Other parts of the country also saw an increase in sales. KFVS in Cape Girardeau, MO, reported one new gun owner decided on his purchase because he worried about gun laws tightening following the movie theater shooting.
It follows a trend seen after tragedies like the 2011 Tuscon, AZ, shooting, the 2007 Virginia Tech shootings and 9/11. Some people feel the need for added protection, and some buy for fear gun laws might change and they won't be able to later.
On Friday, a shooter armed with an assault rifle and other weapons opened fire in a movie theater, killing 12 people and wounding 58 more. Aurora police took James Eagan Holmes, 24, into custody outside the theater shortly after; he is the lone suspect in the investigation.
