JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - The Mississippi State Health Department is reporting seven new human cases of West Nile virus in the state.
The new cases are in Marion, Yazoo, Hinds, Jones, Forrest, Covington and Coahoma counties, bringing the state total for 2012 to 11.
So far this year, cases have been reported in Lauderdale, Hancock, Lincoln, Marion, Yazoo, Hinds, Jones, Forrest, Covington, Coahoma and Wayne counties.
One case originally reported in Jones County was corrected to Wayne County.
In 2011, Mississippi had 52 cases and five deaths from West Nile virus.
Health officials say residents should take precautions like removing sources of standing water where mosquitoes breed and to wear long pants and sleeves in mosquito-prone areas during peak times from dusk until dawn. Mosquito repellent is also recommended.
