ELLISVILLE, MS (WDAM) -

Dozens of Jones County firefighters spent much of their Saturday morning learning more about finding missing people. They participated in an overland search and rescue class at the Whitehead Advanced Technology Center at Jones County Junior College.

Most of the instruction was indoors, because of rainy weather.

"It's just not go out there combing through the woods, there's a lot more to it that needs to be coordinated and understood by all," said Linda Cranford, public information officer for the Jones County Fire Council and Jones County Emergency Management.

"We are teaching the Homeland Security curriculum, per se, that we have developed as a group from Homeland Security," said James Smith, director of Lamar County Emergency Management. Smith served as instructor for the course. "We've done that to make sure that the state and the local levels are on the same page," he said.

About 30 volunteers took the class.
