Jefferson County Sheriff Peter Walker has identified the woman found dead in the cemetery of East Mount Olive Baptist Church Wednesday night.
A woman is listed in stable condition after being carjacked, raped, and shot twice in Lamar County early Friday morning, and a suspect is in custody.
Authorities have arrested a "subject of interest" who is now in custody. He was arrested on unrelated charges, but is expected to be charged with the carjacking, aggravated assault, and rape.
Sheriff Danny Rigel said the incident unfolded after the woman left a midnight showing at the Grand Theater in Hattiesburg.
Authorities detailed the following account: The 21-year-old woman stopped at a stop sign at the intersection of Weathersby Road and Oak Grove Road at about 2:30 a.m. when a man in a truck stopped at the intersection exited his vehicle, opened her car door, and jumped into the back seat of her car. He then forced her to drive at gunpoint to a house under construction in The Trace subdivision where she was raped. The suspect then forced her back into the car, drove around, then dropped her off on West Fourth Street.
The victim told authorities she started running and was shot twice, once in the leg and once in the stomach. Authorities said she hid behind some trees until the suspect drove away. She then ran to a nearby house where owners called 911.
Rigel says the suspect's car was found around 3:30 this morning still running where the incident first took place. The suspect also abandoned the victim's car at the Belmont Apartment Complex in Lamar County.
