Dozens of veterans gathered for a free health fair at the VA Outpatient Clinic in Hattiesburg Wednesday.
HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -
Veterans in the Hattiesburg area were invited to participate in a health event just for them Wednesday night. The Veterans Administration hosted a free health fair at the VA Outpatient Clinic at Wesley Medical Center.
It was part of a statewide tour called, Tell a Veteran/Bring a Veteran.
The goal is to enroll Mississippi veterans in VA healthcare. Services at the fair included audiology and eye screenings, blood pressure checks and diabetic education.
"We're hosting an outreach to patients in our community who are not being seen in the VA system, in our VA Clinic here in Hattiesburg," said Dr. Stephen Beam, medical director for the VA Outpatient Clinic. "Many people don't know about it and some may have heard about it, they just haven't come in to see us," Beam said.
"Our purpose today is to educate the veterans, have them enroll in healthcare if they're eligible and that way, they'll protect the benefit they've earned for serving our country," said Fred Nichols, CBO for the G.V. (Sonny) Montgomery VA Medical Center in Jackson.
Hattiesburg was the second stop on the 10-day tour which began Tuesday in Meridian.
