(RNN) - In a rare interview, former President George W. Bush says life after the presidency is "awesome" and he's content with being out of the public eye.
In the hour-long sit down, given to the Hoover Institution and posted on YouTube, Bush says he's trying to regain his anonymity as much as possible.
"The … person who served as a role model for me for a long time was George H. W. Bush, who famously said 'Once you leave the stage, you stay off the stage.' I thought long and hard about that and decided that not being on the stage was something I was comfortable with," he said.
Bush has kept an intentionally low profile since leaving office in 2009 and has kept mum on his opinions about President Barack Obama and his policies.
"I think it's bad for the presidency to have former presidents bloviating, opining, telling people how it ought to be done," he said.
"I don't want to undermine our president, whoever is president. A former president can do that and I think it's bad for the presidency itself."
That said, Bush says he supports Mitt Romney in November.
And as for his time in politics?
"I crawled out of the swamp and I'm not crawling back in," he joked.
"I think striving for a legacy is a complete waste of time. A legacy will emerge with the reach of time and I'm perfectly comfortable with a couple of facts. One, I won't be around to read it. And two, there will be objective historians who properly analyze the decisions I made."
