New obstacle course dedicated to fallen canine officer

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

A new canine obstacle course at the Hattiesburg Police and Fire training Academy was dedicated Tuesday morning to "Nero", the officer canine, who lost his life in the line of duty last month.

"Nero" was killed and his handler Officer Chris Hensley was seriously injured when their police vehicle collided head-on with an 18-wheeler on I-59. Hensley was released from the hospital this past Monday and is still recovering from his injuries. Though he is expected to make a full recovery, no time line has been given for his return to duty.

The obstacle course was made possible by the Greater Pine Belt Community Foundation who donated the materials. They started a program called "Cover our K-9'," to help protect the dogs and their handlers.

A plaque was placed at the new course in honor of "Nero."

Hattiesburg Police continue to investigate the accident and no new information on it has been released.
