Anthony Alford earns MaxPreps Boys Athlete of the Year
HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -
One more award won't hurt him. On Monday, MaxPreps named Anthony Alford the 2011-2012 Boys Athlete of the Year, after a senior season in which the former Petal All-American garnered the Clarion Ledger's Mr. Football and Mr. Baseball award.
Alford is the first athlete in the history of the state to win both awards in the same year. Over the course of his final football season in a Panthers uniform, which saw Petal appear in the 6A state championship game, Alford threw for 2,058 yards and 20 touchdowns, while rushing for 1,731 yards and 24 more scores.
As equally productive on the baseball diamond last season, Alford batted .483 with 31 RBIs, 39 runs scored, five home runs and 14 stolen bases. In June's Major League first-year player draft, the Petal product was selected 112 overall in the second round by the Toronto Blue Jays. While he signed a contract with Toronto, reportedly worth double the $424,000 normally offered to the 112 pick, Alford remained committed to the University of Southern Mississippi football team. He'll suit up for head coach Ellis Johnson and the Golden Eagles this fall.
In five games playing for the Blue Jays' Class A farm team, Alford appeared in five games, going only 3-for-18 at the plate, but blasted the first home run of his pro career in only his second game.
He's currently working out in Hattiesburg, preparing for the Southern Miss football season. Fall camp opens up Aug. 3, and Alford is expected to compete with four other gun-slingers for the starting job.
