A Hattiesburg retailer teamed up with local emergency response agencies Saturday to help you get ready for storms and other disasters. Home Depot hosted the first Hurricane Awareness Day in the parking lot of its O'Ferrell Street location.

Agencies such as Forrest County Emergency Management, the American Red Cross, the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency and the Hattiesburg Fire Dept. were available to answer questions about hurricane preparedness.

"You've got to be prepared for it and that's what we want people to do," said Terry Steed, executive director of Forrest County Emergency Management. "Have your preparedness kit. Be ready to be self-sustaining for three to four days and plan now so you don't have to at the last minute," Steed said.

"It's here, at any moment, there could be (a hurricane) developing and we just want to make sure everybody is ready and prepared for that one that could possibly devastate our community," said Will DeLong, operation assistant manager for Home Depot.

The agencies also had plenty of informative handouts to pass along to store patrons.
