A retired district captain with the Mississippi Dept. of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks has been sworn in as interim sheriff of Jasper County. John Keenan, 66, took the oath or office Tuesday morning from Circuit Judge Eddie Bowens at the Jasper County Courthouse.
Keenan takes over for former sheriff Keith Murphy, who resigned Monday for personal reasons after only a few months in office. Murphy did not attend the swearing in ceremony.
A special election for a permanent sheriff will be held on Nov. 6. Keenan said he will not run in that election.
"Policies that Murphy has put in place, some that Sheriff Cross had had prior to him still in place, we're going to continue along those lines," said Keenan. "(I) don't expect any major changes in the next three to four months," he said.
Keenan retired from the Meridian District of the Mississippi Dept. of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks in June of 2010.
