LAMAR COUNTY, MS (WDAM) -

The longest tenured deputy in the Lamar County Sheriff's Department is retiring.

Billy Mcalpin is leaving the force after 28-years. Friday a retirement party was thrown in his honor at the Lamar County Justice Court . Sheriff Danny Rigel presented Mcalpin with a plaque commemorating his years on the force and the Lamar County Supervisors voted unanimously to sell him his service revolver for $1.

Rigel says it's tough to lose all the experience Mcalpin brought to the department in his 28-years.

"Nowadays in law enforcement that's a milestone to stay with one organization that long. He needs to be commended for it, said Rigel. "Billy's done a great job all these years. He's got a great work ethic that I hope the younger guys try to emulate."

Mcalpin plans on enjoying his grandchildren and taking it easy in retirement
