SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -

There was no resolution in Thursday's meeting between Shreveport Mayor Cedric Glover and The Shreveport Dog Park Alliance, which had hoped to persuade him to sign off on funding for a new dog park.

Funding for the park, which would be located at Hamel Memorial Park off Clyde Fant Parkway in Shreveport, was approved last week by the Red River Waterway Commission.

Dog park supporter Brittany Matthews started a petition last week after Glover said he would not sign off on the $280,000 project. The petition generated more than 600 signatures in less than a week.

On Thursday, Glover remained adamant that there are bigger priorities right now for the city. Members of the alliance insists its not about dogs, but that it's a park the whole city could use, and that other cities have them. If you build it, they will come, they say.

"The meeting was open ended. I think there was some further dialog including the Red River Waterway Commission in with that dialog that maybe we can come to a good place that benefits both of us," says Cynthia Keith with the Dog Park Alliance. "And not only will the city get what they want, but dog park alliance will get a park for dogs which really is a park for people."

Glover says he's not against dog parks, and asked the alliance to look into how other cities are funding theirs or otherwise find a way to do it with private funding.
