Jasper County investigating possible theft of railroad metal

JASPER COUNTY, MS (WDAM) -

Four suspects in a possible railroad metal theft ring were taken into custody Monday following a traffic stop by Jasper County Sheriff Keith Murphy.

A bolo was issued for the vehicle the suspects were in and Murphy spotted it pulling a trailer on Highway 15 near Bay Springs. The trailer was full of rails, spikes, and other metal items from a railroad.

Murphy questioned the four, then called investigators to the scene. The four suspects were arrested on various unrelated charges to include possession of a controlled substance, and open container and alcohol violations. They were also questions about the railroad material and more charges could be forthcoming.

Investigator Thad Windham says they are working closely with railroad law enforcement agents and the Secretary of States office and more arrests could be made.

"It is illegal for anyone without a special permit to possess, steal, take or carry away, try and sell anything related to a railroad," said Windham. "That's the issue, some people just don't want to pay attention to the law."

Authorities are still trying to determine where the material may have been taken from.

Two of the suspects have been released on bond. The other two remain in the Jasper County Jail.
