A Hattiesburg nightclub will be the scene of what could be a historic daytime rock concert Thursday morning. Benny's Boom Boom Room in downtown Hattiesburg is set to host a sold-out show by Grammy Award-winning alternative rock band The Flaming Lips and 70's rock icon Jackson Browne.
They're playing the Hub City as part of an effort to set a new world's record for performing the most live shows in a 24-hour period. Hattiesburg will be the fifth stop on an eight-city tour that begins in Memphis Wednesday afternoon and wraps up Thursday in New Orleans.
"We're really excited," said Benny Shemper, owner of Benny's Boom Boom Room. "It's just overwhelming and the response we've gotten has been just crazy. We sold out of tickets in like 17 seconds," he said. He added, "there are going to be nine tour buses here tomorrow. There's going to be MTV, VH-1, CMT. We're happy to be a part of it and putting Hattiesburg on the map."
The doors open at 5:30 a.m. Country singer Hunter Hayes opens the show at 6:30. The Flamings Lips take the stage at 7:45.
If you don't have tickets, don't worry. You can still see the show. It will be broadcast live on a big-screen TV just outside the club on E. Front Street.
