Forrest County shelter ready for use

New Forrest County Community Shelter New Forrest County Community Shelter

The new Forrest County Community Shelter is complete and ready for use.

The shelter is located next the Multi-purpose Center.

In the event of a pending hurricane or other type of natural disasters the 10,000-square-foot shelter can house 1000-people for up to 36-hours.

Seventy-five-percent of 2.2-million-dollar project was funded by a grant from FEMA with the rest of the money coming from MEMA.

After Hurricane Katrina the Forrest County Supervisors say they saw a huge need to keep residents safer during similar events.

"I think we've done that is a big way, by the equipment we've purchased, facilities like this, the safe rooms for our employees at our county barns and our fire halls," said David Hogan, President, Board of Supervisors. "This is a perfect example of the fruits of our labor."

Once the decision is made to open the shelter, it will be staffed by the American Red Cross.
