Northbound lanes of I-59 now open, officer out of surgery

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

After being closed for more than 12-hours both northbound lanes of I-59 at Highway 98 East reopened shortly after 1 p.m.

Major Hardy Sims of the Hattiesburg Police Department says Officer Chris Hensley is out of surgery and is doing well and expected to make a full recovery. Sims says Hensley received several injuries to his arms and legs.

Hensley was injured in a Wednesday night accident when an 18-wheel tanker hit his vehicle head-on while he was attempting to assist a stranded motorist. The driver of the tanker truck was also injured in the crash and taken to a local hospital. He was treated and released. Hensley's K-9 dog Nero was killed in the crash.

Traffic was rerouted from I-59 north to Hwy 98 east over to Elk's Lake Road and then rerouted back onto Hwy 98 west back to I-59 while the accident scene was being worked.

The tanker truck from Bulk Transportation was carrying some type of hazardous material. A team from the  United States Environmental Services Hazardous Waste Response Division responded to the scene.

The accident is being investigated by the Mississippi Highway Patrol and the Hattiesburg Police Department.
