PURVIS, MS (WDAM) -

Property taxes may soon be going up to help balance the budget for Lamar County schools. School district officials have proposed a new budget of $77.8 million, which is up $4.8 million over last year.

It would mean an increase of .9 mills and would raise taxes on a $100,000 home by $9 a year.

"A major reason for our request of the estimated .9 millage is the high-growth funding formula of MAEP (Mississippi Adequate Education Program) was not funded at its full level again this year," said Dr. Ben Burnett, superintendent of education for Lamar County Schools. "Had that been funded at the high-growth funding formula, we could have decreased millage rather than increasing by .9 mills," Burnett said.

The Lamar County School Board votes on the budget July 12. A resolution asking for the increase will be sent to the Lamar County Board of Supervisors in August.
