Road improvements on one of the busiest sections of Hardy Street are expected to get under way before the end of the year.
Tuesday night the Hattiesburg City Council approved plans to widen and re-pave Hardy from 21st to 25th Avenue. The widening consists of adding a center turn lane with short medians. This will allow traffic heading toward downtown not to be impeded by drivers turning left off of Hardy.
"The goal is to prevent delays caused by mainly left turn conflicts," said Bert Kurykendall, Hattiesburg City Engineer. "If you are heading east and you are in the left lane and all of a sudden there's a line of seven cars stopped in front of you waiting for the lead car to turn left. We believe this will help to eliminate that."
Adding sidewalks on both sides of the roadway is also part of the project as part of the cities Complete Streets Program.
The project is funded mostly by a Mississippi Department of Transportation grant. The estimated cost is around $920,000 with MDOT paying $640,000.
Once the construction gets underway, it's expected to take about nine-months to complete. Kuyrkendall says there will be lane closures during this time and drivers should expect delays or look for alternate routes.
