HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

The administrator for Region IV of the U.S. Small Business Administration met Hattiesburg-area business leaders during a luncheon sponsored by the Area Development Partnership at the Lake Terrace Convention Center Tuesday.

Cassius Butts provided information on ways the SBA could help start or expand local businesses.

Butts said last year, the Southeast Region of the SBA backed more than $4 billion in loans to small businesses...a sign that the nation's economy is recovering. And new job statistics show the Hub City's economy is recovering as well.

"In the last twelve months, we've added 900 net new jobs in greater Hattiesburg," said Chad Newell, president of the Area Development Partnership. "That's a one-and-a-half percent increase in our employment base, which actually leads the State of Mississippi," Newell said.

"99 percent of the economy is based off of small business in this country and so here in Hattiesburg, we can definitely see the reflection of that and we want to make sure it's supported and that's why I'm here today," said Butts.

Butts' visit also included a tour of several local businesses.

He oversees SBA activities in eight states.
