HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss men's golf team earned a perfect Academic Progress Rate (APR) score of 1,000 for the 2010-11 academic year.
"I'm certainly excited that we received a perfect APR for the 2010-11 season," said Southern Miss head coach Jerry Weeks. "That just shows that we are trying to recruit the student-athlete, and the emphasis is on the student. We work hard in that regard and we are very honored to receive this award."
Southern Miss was one of 59 men's golf teams nationally who are receiving the APR Award.
"Our mission at the University of Southern Mississippi is to be creative, bold and determined," added Director of Athletics Jeff Hammond. "That is to succeed not only on the field but also in the classroom. What we have demonstrated with the golf team is a firm commitment to meeting that vision of producing student-athletes that will make us proud in the future. It demonstrates the commitment of (Coach Jerry Weeks) and (Assistant Coach Jim Garren), the willingness of a group of young men to listen and the increasing emphasis on the academic side of who we are. So honestly, I'm elated, because this is why we're here."
Each year the NCAA honors selected Division I sports teams by publicly recognizing their latest multiyear NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate (APR). This announcement is part of the overall Division I academic reform effort and is intended to highlight teams that demonstrate a commitment to academic progress and retention of student-athletes by achieving the top APRs within their respective sports. Specifically, these teams posted multiyear APRs in the top 10 percent of all squads in each sport. This year's release will again include recognition in the sport of football by subdivision (i.e., Football Bowl Subdivision and Football Championship Subdivision).
The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team's academic performance.
