HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

Dozens of Hattiesburg children attended an annual ceremony Thursday commemorating Flag Day at the African-American Military History Museum.

The event featured a demonstration by Youth Challenge Cadets of the proper way to fold the American flag. Boy Scouts from Troop 461 also led attendees in the Pledge of Allegiance.

"We do it to foster spirit and Esprit De Corps within the community and teach our young kids the history of the flag," said Ralph R. Lindsey, vice-president of the African-American Military History Museum Committee.  Lindsey, a veteran, spoke about the history of Flag Day at the ceremony.

"I learned that there are a lot of people out here who fight for us and how this flag represents us and let the other people know from other countries that this is what we are and what we're a part of," said Elijah Walker, a member of Troop 461.

This was the second year for the holiday event.
