COLUMBIA, MS (WDAM) -

Construction will soon begin in Columbia on a one-of-a-kind tourist and educational attraction that focuses on the importance of the Pearl River.

A kick-off event for the new Pearl River Interpretive Plaza was held Wednesday.

The main feature of the project will be a large, scale model of the entire Pearl River basin, from Choctaw County to the Gulf of Mexico. It will be located on the site of the old Columbia Ice and Power Company.

"We have an artesian well here in Columbia that was the site of the first ice house years and years ago and we're going to use that artesian well as the water for the river in the model," said Donovan McComb, vice-president of the Marion County Development Partnership.

During the event, Mississippi Southern District Transportation Commissioner Tom King presented developers with a Transportation Enhancement Grant for $240,000.  It will pay for most of the project.

"This is a special need that the city had and they applied for this and I applaud them for their aggresiveness in going after this," said King.

A grant from the Mississippi Development Authority has paid for a parking lot which has already been constructed adjacent to the plaza.
