DES MOINES, Iowa – Southern Miss' Ganna Demydova turned in a gold medal performance in the triple jump competition at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships with a school-and-meet record mark of 14.20m (46-7.25) at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa.
Demydova captures the Golden Eagles' third national title in track and field in the last two years. For her performance, she garnered her second-straight USTCCCA first team All-America honor.
Demydova vaulted out to the top spot in her first attempt with a jump of 14.20m (46-7.25) for a new NCAA meet record. She did not improve her mark on her second attempt of 14.12m (46-5) but still remained in the lead. Demydova had the top mark heading into the finals before Kansas' Andrea Geubelle recorded a mark in what appeared to be a new collegiate mark of 14.32m (46'11.75) in her fourth attempt. However, Southern Miss head coach Kevin Stephen protested the jump and a post-competition video review involving three independent judges decided that Geubelle was over the line and that Demydova was the national champion.
The Southern Miss women's team finished in a tie for 12th in the team standings at the championship.
Demydova finishes her career with two All-America distinctions, a national title, a NCAA, conference and school record (triple jump) and two Conference USA titles.
