Jones County issues burn advisory

JONES COUNTY, MS (WDAM) -

Dry conditions, low humidity, and high winds has led to a spike in out of control brush fires in Jones County.

Many of these fires have been started by debris fires that have gotten out of control. The biggest problems areas have been south of the Highway 84 East corridor and in the southwest part of the county.

The spike in these type of fires has led fire coordinator Dan McKenna to issue a burn advisory for the county.

"This is not a burn ban, it is a burn advisory. The next step would be the issuance of a burn ban," said McKenna. "We're trying to take the load off the volunteer departments from responding to these calls in the daytime particularly."

McKenna is asking residents not to burn anything until the county gets some significant rainfall.
