Hattiesburg Parks and Recreation needs life guards

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

The Hattiesburg Park and Recreation Department is having to maintain an abbreviated schedule at the three public pools in the city because of a shortage of certified life guards.

The three pools are now running on a staff of five life guards, when to be fully operational they need 12.

The summer program hosts 15 summer camps and opens to the public in the afternoon to the public from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.. Because of the shortage they have to limit the time the pools will be open to the public.

Parks and Recreations is looking to fill the vacant positions as soon as they can, but added that getting certified can be strenuous.

"You have to be a good enough swimmer to swim 300-yards, tread water for two-minutes, and be able to dive down 12-fett to retrieve a five-pound brick with both hands," said Ann Jones, General Manager, Hattiesburg Parks and Recreation. "It doesn't sound like a lot, but physically it's a challenge."
