USM holds "Learn to Drive" Program

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

For a new driver, getting behind the wheel can be pretty intimidating, but that's just what USM's "Learn to Drive" program is for.  Through the program, area high school students are one step closer to feeling comfortable in the car.  For three weeks, participants will be able to drive on the Southern Miss driving range. About 60 area students have registered for the class; all for various reasons.  Those who complete the course successfully will earn one-half credit toward their high school graduation.  Also, many insurance companies offer a discount for the completion of the driver's education program.  The registration fee is $275, but for the chance to drive it's well worth it for some of the class's students.

Participant John Blanchard said, "In today's society driving is everything. If you can't drive, you really can't go anywhere."

"A lot of parents want to offer their kids the opportunity to come out and get experience.  They just don't have the time," said USM Driver Education Co-Director, Tony Farlow.

The "Learn to Drive" program will run from June 4-22.
