JONES COUNTY, MS (WDAM) -

A Jones County Grandmother and her four grandchildren lost their home to fire Friday afternoon.

The fire broke out at about 1 p.m. at the home of Tina Hurst on the corner of Riels and Bully Garrick Roads . Hurst says her grandchildren were playing on the back porch and saw smoke coming from the rear of the home and yelled fire. She attempted to put the fire out herself, but it spread to quickly.

When Southwest Jones volunteer firefighters arrived the rear of the home was already engulfed in flames. With the assistance of South Jones volunteers they were able to quickly get it under control, but not in time to save the home.

Hurst and her grandchildren escaped unharmed, but she was checked out at the scene by EMSERV for precautionary measures.

"I feel blessed because we're all safe," said Hurst.  "I feel sad because these kids have been through such a hard time and now they're going through another hard time."

The family lost everything in the fire. If anyone would care to help them out contact Annette Stewart at 601-325-6842.
