Woman killed in Tuesday night train accident identified

FORREST COUNTY, MS (WDAM) -

Forty-eight-year-old Carolyn Ann Spiers of the Petal-Leeville area was killed Tuesday night when a northbound freight train struck her while she was standing on the tracks.

Forrest County Coroner Butch Benedict says Spiers was hit at about 10:30 p.m. on the tracks between Leeville Road and Eastabuchie Road. The train conductor told authorities he saw her standing on the tracks facing Highway 11. He said he applied the brakes and sounded the trains whistles, but she made no attempt to move.

It's not known why Spiers was standing on the tracks or why she made no attempt to get out of the way.
