Governor Bryant speaks to students in the Hub City

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

The young men attending this week's Boy's State at Southern Miss, received a special visitor Tuesday morning.

Governor Phil Bryant traveled to the Hub City Tuesday, to address the students at Bennett Auditorium on the University of Southern Mississippi campus. Bryant is one of nearly a dozen others who will speak to the students through the week, including Congressman Steven Palazzo, Attorney General Jim Hood, Senator Roger Wicker, and Justice David Chandler.

Bryant spoke about his duties as governor, including public safety and economic development.

"The first political event I worked on was here, in this building as a matter of a fact, in 1975 when Gil Carmichael was running for governor," explained Governor Bryant. "I heard him speak, and help bring him here. It encouraged me to go on to public service in the future and it will encourage them. I'm proud to be here with them today."

Boy's State is a leadership program for rising high school juniors from across the state. During the week, students simulate how government runs in the fictitious state of "Magnolia", and compete for different government positions.
